The most widely used type of spring made from wire stock coiled as a constant diameter into a helical form, the load being applied by compression along the helix axis. Other forms include: conical, tapered and concave.

Similar in form to the helical compression springs, these are loaded by torque about the helix axis. To transmit this torque, special ends are normally required. Also available in a double torsion style.
